1981 Ibanez AS-200 & Original Hard Case

What a beautiful  & quite rare guitar this is. Built in Japan in 1981, this 335 style semi acoustic with a solid centre block definitely ticks all the right boxes & is a joy to play. It is often referred to as the "John Scofield" model as this was his preferred guitar which he played for years. The actual John Scofield signature model is  a JSM-100VT which came out a good deal later. As a 35+ year old guitar, it does show some wear & the gold hardwear has tarnished in places but I think this adds to the character & I would choose this every time over the modern AS-200's that Ibanez are producing that are made in China.

When it came in, it had some lacquer damage to the back of the neck which felt a bit uncomfortable when you played it on the lower frets. It has now had the back of the neck re-finished in this area and is silky smooth. Please check out the photos of this in the gallery. This work was carried out by my luthier Andy Crockett who is based near me in Kent & very highly regarded (Google him) When Andy had the guitar, he also confirmed a recent refret had been carried out on the guitar to a high standard. He also noted that the input jack socket has a square brass surround. This is non-original and was added at some point in the past following some damage to the socket.

A search on Ebay shows quite a few of these 1980's guitars for sale in the USA & Japan at around £1200-£1400. As already mentioned, Ibanez have reissued this model but it has the more modern headstock shape, is built in China & priced around £900-£1000. I believe there is a Japanese made AS-100 but that is priced at over £2000.
