Teisco SP-62 Spectrum Metallic Red 2000

Another nice rare find in Japan is this beautiful Teisco SP-62 Spectrum, a Japanese made reissue from Kawai.

A gorgeous guitar & almost impossible to find outside of Japan. The used market is still healthy & models sell for around £800.00 but this is before you add on shipping from Japan & taxes

I was lucky enough to find this near mint example in Japan from 2000. It plays well & sounds great. The 3 coloured  switches are quite simple. The green one switches the neck pickup off & on, the yellow switch does the same for the bridge pickup & the red one is a bass cut switch. There are master volume & tone knobs & a tremolo arm & that is about it. The guitar has a 24.75" scale length the same as a Gibson and is good fun to play. This particular guitar is in fantastic condition with no scratches, dents, chips or scuffs

Some Teisco history....

Teisco guitars were first introduced in the mid 60's in Japan. They made various styles, probably the best known in the UK were the "Top Twenty" & "Audition" brands that were sold in Woolworths.  They have become quite collectible now but in truth, they weren't the greatest with poor pickups, thick necks & open tuners. In the late 90's Japanese manufacturer of high end pianos and guitars "Kawai" made some reissues of the Spectrum 5, Spectrum SP-62 &  K56 Sharkfin model. These guitars were built to a much higher standard with decent pickups, enclosed tuners & slim playable necks but still retaining the original quirky features like the bevelled edges, pointy horns etc

Here's a short review I found of the guitar online:

Teisco Spectrum SP-62.

A rare reissue made by Kawai in Japan and discontinued long ago, this model features a red metallic finish. It's uncommon for a reissue instrument to excel beyond the features and playability of the original example, but the Teisco Spectrum reissues are those rare instruments that truly do improve on their predecessors, with tighter tolerances, better fit and finish work, more reliable and better machined hardware, and split coil pickups that certainly pack a punch.

The pickups are bright and percussive, with plenty of snap and hollow twang. While the green and yellow two-way switches engage the pickups, the red switch is a boost that both pushes the signal a bit harder and fattens it up. These guitars weigh in at 7lbs 14oz.

The neck has a slender C shape that gains more shoulder as you travel up the board without getting chunky. The 22 fret thick slab rosewood fretboard retains the original slender fretwire. The frets are flawless and the guitar plays cleanly in all registers. The scale length measures 24 3/4" and the nut is 1 11/16" in width. The headstock features Teisco's 1950s metal disc logo as well as a set of modern chrome tuning machines that hold pitch well.

All of the electronics work as intended, and the chrome hardware and plastic parts are near mint. The vibrato actuates easily, with a smooth, Bigsby-esque response. The deep German Carve on the wicked curves and contours of the Spectrum body shape really make this guitar stand out.

As stated many times, due to courier damage, all my guitars are shipped in hard cases (usually new) this one being a plain black one. I do have a tweed option and these are a little dearer (Extra £12). If you prefer that, please email me for details. If you are collecting, I'm happy to knock off the price of the case (About £30) & I may even have an old gig bag you can have to take it away in

So to sum up, an excellent guitar from Teisco/Kawai Japan. This model is impossible to find here in the UK unless you import it. Why not play something that's just a little bit different?
