1983 Westone Rainbow II Violin Sunburst MIJ and original case
Matsumoku built guitar from the 1980's
The Rainbow I's & II's from Westone were built in Japan at the famous Matsumoku factory from 1981 to around 1988. They were a very good quality, Japanese made 335 style guitar. There were various versions but I suppose the most obvious difference is that Rainbow I's had chrome hardwear & II's had gold coloured hardwear. This is a version 3 guitar which is denoted by the "bird" logo on the headstock Other differences with this guitar are that the body is made from laminated Maple (it used to be laminated Ash)
This particular instrument came in in excellent condition for the year. I haven't really had to do anything to it. The only thing to note was that the neck pickup been replaced with a Seymour Duncan Humbucker pickup in the neck position and the original Super Twin A750 in the bridge . The guitar plays and sounds excellent. The original neck pickup has long since disappeared unfortunately.
One other interesting thing to note about this guitar is that it is fitted with PEQ tone controls. These work as normal tone controls up to the halfway point when you turn the pot but after that they act as a way of changing the switching from series to parallel. Reading up on them, they weren't very effective & often they have been changed to normal tone pots. I suppose it's nice to have the originals though. The guitar sounds really nice & the tonal variations are good IMO.
This particular guitar has been really well looked after but does have one or two little nicks and blemishes which I have photographed and are in the gallery. The fret wear is also minimal for the age of the guitar. For around £500 I think this guitar is really good value.
