1979-81 Yamaha Japan SG-800S Tobacco burst & new hard case
Beautifully made guitar from Yamaha Japan
Yamaha SG-800s were built in Japan between 1979-1981. They are really the little brother of the SG-1000, 2000 & 3000 models. You don't see so many in the UK & the SG-1000 is definitely the more popular one but it carries a hefty price tag now fetching £1000-£1300! The only differences are that the SG-1000 has an Ebony fretboard & block markers. The SG-800 has a Rosewood fretboard & dot markers. That's it.
This particular instrument is in very good condition for its age but does have some bumps and bruises and some bucklerash on the back but I think it adds to the vintage looks of this great instrument. There is also some "misting" of the lacquer on the back of the neck. it's purely cosmetic, no dents etc. It feels nice and smooth. One thing I will point out is that it was missing its pickguard when it came in. No chance of purchasing a replacement but I was lucky enough to get a template from a customer's guitar & I've had an exact replica made by Kent luthier Andy Crockett. I have showed photos of the guitar with and without the pickguard as I can understand some people not liking it, hence why they are often missing but I've tried to put the guitar back to exactly how it should be. If you want to remove it, no problem, I can even fill and smooth the hole for you if you prefer. Just let me know
As I have said, the guitar has been well cared for and is a joy to play. It's one of those "I can't put it down" guitars! Powerful twin humbuckers from Yamaha which both have coil splitting. These are operated by Yamaha's push/push switches. So much better than fiddling with the usual push/pull ones in my opinion. The neck is great and the frets have no indents and plenty of life left. The guitar is made from solid Mahogany so, as expected at 3.8kg, it's no lightweight but it's well balanced and just feels great.
